Who should attend?
The WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge. It is suitable wherever a good level of wine knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in the customer service and sales functions of hospitality, retail and wholesale industries. It is also useful for those who have a general interest in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge.

Successful candidates will be able to describe and compare the styles of wines produced from internationally and regionally important grape varieties, interpret wine labels from the main wine-producing regions of the world and give basic guidance on appropriate selection and service, as well as understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation.

- The style and quality of wines:
- made from 22 regionally important grape varieties
- produced in over 70 geographical indications (GIs) around the world
- How grape varieties and winemaking processes influence the key styles of

- Fortified wines
- Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality
- Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
- Principles of food and wine pairing
To gain the Level 2 qualification, candidates will be required to:
- a multiple choice paper of 50 questions

If spirits knowledge is required, we suggest that you join the Level 2 – WSET® Award in Spirits course.
Included in the course price are: – The course material, the wine samples, the Wine and Spirit Education Trust examination (recognised in over 80 countries around the world), the teaching as well as access to our study support site during the duration of the course.
Required prior knowledge for the course: – no prior knowledge is required. But an advantage, to have followed the Level 1 – Introduction to Wine and Swiss Wine course, or completed a Swiss restaurant service apprentiship.

Guided learning hours: – it is recommended that a candidate should allocate at least 28 hours of study to complete the programme. The hours will usually be a combination of taught and study time. It is also recommended that the teaching delivery time for the unit programme is not less than 16 hours.
Learning outcomes – at the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:
- understand the environmental influences and grape-growing options in the vineyard and how these will impact the style and quality of wine
- understand how winemaking and bottle ageing influence the style and quality of wine
- understand how environmental influences, grape-growing options, winemaking and bottle ageing influence the style and quality of wines made fromt he principal grape varieties
- know the style and quality of wines produced from regionally important black and white grape varieties
- understand how the production process can influence the styles of sparkling and fortified wines
- understand the key principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine, and in the pairing of food and wine
Progression routes – upon successful completion of the Level 2 – WSET® Award in Wines, the candidate may progress to the following qualifications:
Level 2 – WSET® Award in Spirits: – for individuals wishing to develop their expertise in spirits and liqueurs, this qualification provides comprehensive training. You will learn about the production methods and characteristics of the main spirits categories, while also exploring key brands and the use of spirits in cocktails
Level 3 – WSET® Award in Wines: – for individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides detailed understanding of the factors that affect style, quality and price. You will learn how to assess wines accurately and use your understanding to make authoritative recommendations
Please note that: – the Level 2 – WSET® Award in Wines or an equivalent level of experience, is required for entry to the Level 3 – WSET® Award in Wines programme
